  • The general registration of births, marriages and deaths in England started in 1837. To obtain information prior to this date it is necessary to consult the local parish registers, many of which are lodged in county record offices, and may have been indexed by local genealogical societies, or organisations such as the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons).
