  • THE MIGRATION OF GEORGE AND EMMA BAGUST TO AUSTRALIA

Contributed by Les Bagust - Sydney Australia- March 2000

The Bagust Family History Site details a Family Tree of George and Emma Bagust and their descendants - perhaps we could call it “The Australian Connection” .

George and Emma were the first Bagust’s to migrate to settle in Australia. They arrived in Sydney in 1844 - in the fairly early days of the Colony.

The details of George and Emma’s voyage to Australia have been researched and are summarised herein for the interest of other family members.

    1. George and Elizabeth travelled on the “Elizabeth” departing Cork on 1st January 1844 and arrived in Sydney on 29th April 1844 - a journey of 118 days - some seventeen weeks.

    2. The “Elizabeth” was a 437 ton vessel and carried a total of 211 immigrants This included eighty one children under the age of fourteen.

    3. The “Elizabeth” did not stop at any ports on the journey to Australia.

    4. George and Emma’s eldest child, Elizabeth was born during the voyage - on the 24th March.

    5. There were a total of eight deaths and six births during the voyage. The records indicate that some of the deaths were from dysentry, convulsions and abortion.

From these brief details you can see that the voyage George and Emma undertook in 1844 was certainly not one for the “faint hearted”. Just compare it with the way we travel by sea these days - luxury cruising on large ocean liners!!

The journey certainly did not “injure” George and Emma. George lived to the age of eighty four and Emma to eighty three.
