Search of Pre-1837 Indexes

The general registration of births, marriages and deaths in England started in 1837. To obtain information prior to this date it is necessary to consult the local parish registers, many of which are lodged in county record offices, and may have been indexed by local genealogical societies, or organisations such as the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons).

On the pages below are the results of searches made in various indexes, mainly over the internet. These are based upon examination of parish registers made by various organisations. They are arranged in date order, and give the parish and county of each entry. The indexes have been searched for BAGUST, and variants on the name. All Bagusts are listed, with the closest variants - eg Bagus, Bagurst, Baugust, but the searches produced many other names that have not been included here. Prominent amongst these are Baghurst, Baughurst, Boggust and Boghurst. If you are interested in these names please send me an e-mail, and I will pass on what information I have in my posession.

The indexes give a valuable overview of the distribution of Bagust's between 1500 and 1800, but they must be interpreted with caution -

Indexes are not primary sources, they have been extracted from often difficult to read parish registers, and have been subject to several transcriptions, at any of which errors may have been introduced. It is necessary to verify important entries against the original records which frequently contain useful additional information.
The coverage of the various indexes is patchy. Many records have not survived, and even the most complete index, the International Genealogical Index (IGI) produced by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS - Mormons) does not cover all parishes, and does not record burials. Other indexes ae produced by local genealogical socities and concentrate upon a single area or county.
Most of the registers list dates of christenings - which are not necessarily the same as dates of birth, but can be months, or even years after the baby was born.
